Carbon Footprint of UVic School of Business

Coldstream worked with the University of Victoria Gustavson School of Business to complete their 2014 corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and reporting in accordance with the World Resources Institute (WRI) GHG Protocol.  This project included reviewing and updating their Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas accounting model and analyzing their GHG emissions for 2014.  The results of this work will be used to inform their organizational GHG emission reduction strategies.

UBC Sustainability Street

Sustainability Street is a UBC campus civil works project that includes new roadways, pathways, water systems, lighting, and landscaping. Coldstream performed LCA of these elements including sensitivity analysis of design alternatives. The results were integrated with cost information and presented to the project team for the purpose of decision-making.

CBFA commissioned Coldstream to produce research reports for the purpose of supporting the activities of National Working Group Four. The reports summarize LCA methodology, provide a literature review of completed construction-sector studies, review current LCA practice and provide guidance on best-practice, and present whole-building LCA case studies.

Comparative Whole-building LCA of a Big-box Retail Building

A 5,090 m2 big-box retail building was the subject of this LCA study comparing two alternative designs. The study was performed according to the LCA standard EN 15978 with the purpose of investigating design comparisons in the context of the new LEED v4 whole-building LCA credit Building Life-cycle Impact Reduction (option 4). Rigorous interpretation was performed to examine the causes of impact and sensitivity to life cycle assumptions.

Coldstream Consulting is closely aligned with the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, a non-profit research collaborative bringing life cycle assessment to the construction sector. We do significant contract work with Athena as research associates, which includes building product and whole-building LCA studies, and the development of their Impact Estimator for Building, the leading North American whole-building LCA software.

Corporate Sustainability Accounting and Strategy for Vancity

Coldstream has worked with Vancity since 2012 to complete their corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and reporting in accordance with the World Resources Institute (WRI) GHG Protocol.  This annual project includes reviewing and updating Vancity’s GHG model, analyzing their GHG emissions and meeting GHG audit requirements.  The results of this work will be used by Vancity to inform their corporate GHG emission reduction strategies.

Seminar for Green Building Professionals

Coldstream conducted a day long LCA seminar with Lighthouse staff.  The seminar addressed the theoretical requirements of conducting ISO compliant LCA studies and exercises on practical skills, such as calculating LCI from facility data and combining unit processes to develop a cradle to grave LCI model. The course included hands on instruction and practice of conducting assessments in the popular LCA software packages Athena Impact Estimator and SimaPro.

Coldstream developed educational sessions to support IDIEM’s launch of DAPCO – an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program.  These sessions focused on applying LCA methods in practice to help companies and stakeholders build value from the use of LCA and EPDs.  We delivered the sessions over a half day in Santiago, Chile to an audience of construction industry professionals.

Coldstream testified at the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission hearings for the Keeyask Generation Station, a proposed 695 MW hydroelectric dam on the lower Nelson River in northern Manitoba. Our testimony included presenting a best-practice protocol we authored for conducting LCA hydroelectric projects as part of an Environmental Impact Statement.

Coldstream developed an economic cost model for the environmental impacts calculated in LCA. We then applied the model to the results of a recent LCA conducted by the Athena Institute and Recollective that considered whether to demolish and rebuild or renovate a building on the campus of the University of British Columbia.

Coldstream is working with RJC to update and expand the scope of their Excel-based screening LCA calculator in accordance with the requirements of the European building LCA standard EN 15978. The tool estimates the environmental impact of various roof envelope systems and whole-building archetypes across Canada.

The Wesbrook Community Centre is a new 2,800mUniversity of British Columbia campus facility which will house  a gym, general meeting and multi-purpose rooms, a dance studio, and café. Working with the architect, mechanical engineers, and future building operators, we investigated the life cycle environmental impacts of designs being considered for the structure, envelope and operating systems.

The UBC District Energy Center is a new 1,800mfacility which will produce hot water for the University of British Columbia campus. Coldstream integrated our environmental LCA work with life cycle costing (LCC) information to inform design-making, including the selection of boiler system. This project is currently slated to earn a LEED Innovation and Design (ID) credit for the use of LCA during design.

Offsetters Clean Technology Inc. sought out Coldstream’s LCA expertise to provide additional services to their corporate carbon footprint and offset clients. As a part of this collaboration, Coldstream developed LCA models to compare the environmental impacts of Step Forward wheat straw-based paper with wood-based alternatives.

An interdisciplinary team, led by Forsite Consulting Ltd., conducted research to address the technical accounting issues of generating forest-based carbon offsets. Coldstream contributed to the sections on dynamic inventorying and the effects of the life cycle of harvested wood products on the overall carbon balance.

LCA of ResinDek® Commercial Decking

Coldstream conducted an LCA to compare and contrast the environmental impacts of the commercial decking product ResinDek® against the standard approach of using concrete. This LCA considered the cradle-to-grave impacts of a 50,000 square foot manufacturing plant mezzanine and estimated the relative global warming, eutrophication, acidification, and resource use of the two options.

Structural Wood Product EPDs

The forest products industry, led by the American Wood Council and Canadian Wood Council, engaged Coldstream to develop ISO-certified Environmental Product Declarations of North American wood products. The declarations, published under Underwriters Laboratories’ EPD Program, can be used to earn LEED credits and summarize the results of LCA studies on lumber, plywood, oriented strandboard, glulam beams, I-joists, redwood decking, medium density fibreboard, and particleboard.
